Skye Events During National Recycle Week

Next week is Recycle Week (22 – 28 June) and this year the Recycle Now campaign is encouraging people to think about the many, easy ways they can waste less and make more of the resources we have.

Councillor John Laing said: “I would like to thank the people of Skye and Lochalsh for the commitment they have shown to the new blue bin kerbside collections which have proved a great success in the first few months of operation. Recycle Week is a further opportunity to find out just how easy it is to reduce, reuse or recycle the resources we’d otherwise waste.  There’s always more we can do without totally changing our lifestyle either by doing something new or more of the same.  The range of materials we can recycle locally has increased, so it’s never been more convenient to be eco-conscious in our living – all year round!  It helps the environment and you might even save money in the process.”

Towards the end of the week the Highland Council Waste Awareness Team, along with Composting Advisor, Sandy Masson, will be running a stand outside the Co-operative supermarkets at Kyle and Broadford where they will be on hand to answer any queries on recycling. Shoppers using re-usable shopping bags instead of taking disposable plastic ones will be invited to take part in a free prize draw. Sandy will also be taking requests for free composting worms, an offer that proved popular at the Compost Awareness Week events in Portree in May. The stand will operate on Friday 26 June in Broadford from 10am to 4pm and at Kyle from 1.00 pm to 7pm.

Two-thirds of consumers now consider themselves committed recyclers, and we are currently recycling 34 per cent of our total household waste across the UK.  From recycling more of our everyday items like glass and plastic bottles to reducing our food waste, re-using carrier bags or trying out new things like home composting, there’s lots of things we can do to help cut back on the amount of waste we send to landfill. People can find out more about ways they can recycle and make a personal pledge to recycle more during Recycling week at recyclenow.com
