HMIe Report on Foyers Primary School, Inverness

In an HMIe report on Foyers Primary School, Inverness, a range of key strengths were identified. The primary school was strongly commended for:

• children’s enthusiasm for learning;

• teachers’ use of the local environment to promote learning; and

• the commitment of the head teacher and all staff to children’s care and wellbeing.

In their report the Inspectors recognised the very good climate and relationships in the school community; the pupils’ high expectations of what they could achieve; and the head teacher’s encouragement for staff to use and share their expertise to ensure improvement. All aspects of learning were found to be good. The school’s self-evaluation was deemed to be satisfactory.
The Inspectors also made a number of recommendations for the school which included improving the evaluation of the school’s work. To help children become more independent learners, standards of neatness and presentation of written work could be higher.  Children’s skills in mental calculation should be developed to ensure quick and accurate responses.

Commenting on the report Maureen Brown, Head Teacher said, "I am very pleased with the report as I feel that it reflects the very positive ethos of the school, the opportunities we provide for all children to achieve their full potential across a broad curriculum, positive teamwork and partnership with the parents and community and our ongoing commitment to improving the school.  We have already begun to address the issues raised in the report with the continuing support of everyone connected with the school and an action plan will be agreed with the authority and issued to parents."

Parent Council Chairperson, Mrs Morag Cameron, also commented: “I was very pleased with the report and felt it covered all aspects of the school in a positive way. It highlighted the hard work of Mrs Brown and her staff who all aim to achieve high standards within the school. The pupils, parents and staff work together to make the school a happy and safe learning environment and we will continue to offer our support.”
