Encouraging Participation in Euro Elections

New residents in the Highlands from European Union countries are being encouraged to register to vote in the forthcoming European Parliamentary elections to choose the six MEPs, who will represent Scotland.

They have until 5 pm on Tuesday 19 May to register with the Electoral Registration Officer for the Highlands and Western Isles, Douglas Gillespie.

While many new residents may already be on the electoral register and qualify to vote in the Scottish parliamentary and local government elections, they require to make an additional application to vote in the European election in this country rather than in their home state.

Mr Gillespie explained: “A significant number of new residents want to get involved in our democratic system and this is very welcome.”

To vote in the European Parliamentary Elections  in this country rather than in their home state , new residents require  to make a supplementary application.  This is a straightforward process but must be completed by 19th May. Anyone who is unsure whether they are fully registered should contact us on 0800 393783 to confirm their status and receive assistance.”

One new resident who will be voting is Renia Kotynia, who moved to Inverness from Poland 3 years ago.

Renia, a business support officer in Inverness, said:  “It is very important to take part in the Euro election – that’s the advantage of living in democracy. Since we are residents in Scotland we can vote for Scottish MEPs.’’

It is estimated that there are 3,500 new residents in the Highlands from EU countries. They have helped increase the population of the Highlands. The population of the Highlands rose from 217,440 in 2007 to 219,400 in 2008, an increase of 1,960 or 0.9%.f 1,960 or 0.9%.
