Conference To Examine How Gender Influences Play
Boys and girls come out to play… does gender affect the way we play and learn?’
We’ve come a long way from the old ‘slugs and snails’ and ‘sugar and spice’ views of boys’ and girls’ childhoods…. But are there fundamental differences in the needs of boys and girls as they grow up and if so, how do we tackle this?
Internationally recognised education ‘guru’, writer and broadcaster Geoff Hannan, a leading authority in gender issues, will explore these issues at the 10th anniversary ACT (Action for Childcare Training) conference in Inverness. Geoff Hannan has achieved widespread recognition for his training presentations and the strategies he has developed for improving performance.
Geoff Hannan has been running his own business for twenty five years and has worked with hundreds of thousands of children, young people and adults around the world. His has published a best-selling book, "Improving Boys’ Performance" and his TV work includes "The Gender Game" [BBC Two], Panorama, "The Future is Female", "It’s Cool to be a Fool" for ITV and "Why Men Don’t Iron" for Channel 4.

The conference, titled ‘Boys and girls come out to play…does gender affect the way we play and learn?’ will be held at Culloden Academy Community Complex on Saturday 12 November. The Highland Council’s Director of Education, Culture and Sport, Bruce Robertson, will chair the day, which includes a lunchtime exhibition, practical workshops and a creche.

ACT formed in 1995 as a way of enabling childcare staff to meet, exchange ideas and get inspiration for their work with children and families. Since then ACT has held an annual conference and its members have contributed to developments in the training for the childcare workforce.
