New Recycling centre for Nairn

A new Recycling Centre for the Nairn area opens to the public on Monday 8th August.

Located at Park Quarry around two miles south of Nairn on the A939 road to Grantown on Spey the Centre was officially opened by Highland Councillor Provost Sandy Park.

Provost Park said: "This is a great facility for Nairn to have a dedicated high quality recycling centre on our doorstep. Previously we used to have to go to Forres or Inverness with all our recyclable waste but now we have one of the best recycling facilities in the North of Scotland."

Councillor Liz MacDonald, chair of the Highland Council’s Nairn Area Transport, Environmental and Community Services Committee said: "For years people in Nairn have been asking the Council for a purpose-built recycling centre and I am delighted for us all that we now have this excellent facility."

Householders will now be able to take their cans, car batteries, cardboard, electrical appliances, engine oil, garden waste, glass bottles and jars, paper, rubble and soil, scrap metal, textiles, tyres, white goods and wood to the Recycling Centre where separate skips and containers will be available for the material to be recycled.

Furniture and household goods can be donated to New Start for reuse by using the container provided at the Recycling Centre. It is hoped that 60% of the waste that is taken to the Recycling Centre will be recycled and add 2.5% to the Council’s 18% recycling target.

More than £250K has been allocated to build the new Recycling Centre from the Scottish Strategic Waste Fund.

Local firm, G F Job Ltd were contracted by The Highland Council to build the new facility which will enable householders to recycle more of their household waste.

Householders will be met at the site entrance by an operative who will direct them to the correct containers and are advised to separate their waste before they go the site. The Recycling Centre is open Monday to Friday 10am – 7pm; Saturdays and Sundays 10am - 4.30pm. The Balblair depot skip on Wednesdays and Saturdays will no longer be in operation.
