A trip down memory lane

The Highland Council has announced details of an exciting project  in Inverness to enable children of all ages to take a trip down memory lane in the city’s Victorian Market.

As part of the Inverness Winter Festival’s Countdown to Christmas programme, the Council has announced that the Inverness Local History Forum is to stage an exhibition of Christmas toys and memorabilia during the first three weekends of December.

Santa’s Toy Museum will open at 12 Noon on Saturday 5 December  and promises to offer a look back to the days before the Internet, Wii Games, Nintendo, Play Stations, I-Pods and I –Phones arrived on the scene 

Inverness Local History Forum Chairman George Christie said: “We hope to exhibit some of the older more traditional toys from our past, such as dolls and teddies, toy prams and cots and clothing.

“We will also displaying some of the not so politically correct items that used to be popular such as toy ironing boards and washing machines for the girls and toys which were very definitely the boys such as trains, boats and automobiles. We will also be displaying traditional games like marbles, snakes and ladders, bagatelle and tidily winks; and seasonal and sporting toys such as skates, toboggans and proper footballs that could give you concussion.

“It is also planned to have a section where children can discover some of the educational and entertaining books and annuals that their grandparents and great grandparents would have settled down to enjoy in the days before television. If any of the older members of our community have something lying in their attic or at the back of their cupboard that they would like to see on display, we would love to hear from anybody who has something that they would like to lend us. Santa’s Toy Museum will be open every weekend from 12 Noon to 3pm from December 5th to December 20th.  Admission is free.
