Stones, Targes and Torques - A fun felt-making day at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery

Children aged 8-12 years are invited to Inverness Museum and Art Gallery on Saturday 15th October for the unique opportunity to take part in a fantastic felt-making workshop day.

The event has been organised by The Highland Council’s Community Learning and Leisure Service as part of Highland Archaeology Fortnight.

Children participating in the event will take inspiration from the archaeology collections at the museum. With the excellent guidance of Ruth Black they will make a collaborative life-size banner inspired by the Pictish Stones on display. In the afternoon they will be able to flex their artistic skills further and make their own smaller pieces, from armlets (bracelets) to targes (shields) to take away and impress their friends and families.

Caroline Leitch, Assistant Curator, has worked with Ruth in the past on a number of community projects, she said: "Ruth is amazing; participants always produce wonderful work with her and often in a short space of time. This is a great opportunity for young people in Inverness to learn about felt-making as well as find out a bit about their local heritage.

"The banner produced by the group on the day will be exhibited at the museum for everyone to enjoy."

Those interested in taking part in the workshop are recommended to book in advance as spaces are filling up. For more information and to make a booking simply contact Inverness Museum on tel: 01463 237 114.
