Batty in Borgie

North Sutherland locals and visitors recently had the opportunity to test their woodworking skills at Forestry Commission Scotland’s log cabins in Borgie Forest.

Paul Castle, Highland Council’s North Sutherland Ranger in co-operation with the Forestry Commission Borgie Team, helped folk to construct their very own wooden bat boxes.

London will be the final destination of some of the boxes constructed at the event by holidaying visitors. Following the bat box construction the group visited a local bat roost at a resident’s home and used bat detectors to help witness the bats emerging to feed.

Paul said: “Bats are fascinating mammals and it’s great to meet folk who are willing to help with the conservation effort by building and erecting bat boxes. I am extremely grateful to Steve Jack and all the Forestry Commission Borgie team for their help during this event.”

The event was part of the 2009 activities run by Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers. Details of other activities can be found by visiting the Highland Council website and searching for countryside ranger events.
