Glen Nevis Visitor Centre boosts Lochaber Mountain Rescue funds

Handing over a cheque for £2155 Highland Councillor Drew McFarlane Slack, Area Chairman of the Planning Development Europe and Tourism Committee said: "I am delighted to present this donation to Lochaber Mountain Rescue which provides a remarkable service to anyone who gets into difficulty on our hills. The donation which comes from visitors to our centre here in Glen Nevis reflects the high level of importance that people attribute to the Mountain Rescue Team’s work."

Receiving the donation, Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team Leader, Terry Confield O.B.E. said: "I would like to thank all who donated money for the mountain rescue team which could not operate if it wasn’t for the support of the local people and businesses. All funds would be put to good use in helping all those who find themselves in distress on the mountains."

Opened in 1993 The Glen Nevis Visitor Centre receives on average 80,000 visitors each year. The centre provides an exhibition and audio-visual display about the natural history, wildlife and social history of Glen Nevis and Ben Nevis. A Countryside Ranger Service is also based at the centre offering a programme of guided walks, talks and educational visits

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team provides rescue for climbers and walkers who get into difficulty on the hills. They are a group of volunteer mountaineers and rely entirely on donations to continue to provide this emergency rescue service.

The Team provides assistance to a variety of people who go into the hills including walkers, climbers, skiers, para gliders, mountain bikers and even dogs. The Team works closely with other agencies including the police and both Royal Navy and Royal Air Force Search & Rescue Services.

Anyone who wishes to make a donation to the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team can do so by sending donations to The Lochaber Mountain Rescue, C/O, The Fort William Police Station.
