A890 road closes for essential maintenance works

The Highland Council is to close the A890 Auchtertyre to Strathcarron road at Stromeferry bypass on Sunday 4 October 2009 for essential rock removal works.

The road closure will run from (i) from 6 am to 11.45 am, (ii) from 1.15  pm to 3.45 pm and (iii) from 4.15 pm to 7.45 pm, between Ardnaff and Attadale.

The rock cutting work being carried out during this closure is vital to maintain the road and this work will help to reduce the risk of further rockfalls.

An alternative route of 145 miles or thereby for southbound traffic will be available via the A890 to Achnasheen, the A832 to Garve, the A835 to Inverness, A82 to Invermoriston, A887 and A87 to Auchtertyre.

An alternative route of 145 miles of thereby for northbound traffic will be available via the A887 and A87 to Invermoriston, the A82 to Inverness, the A835 to Garve, A832 to Achnasheen and A890 to Strathcarron.

These alternative routes will be signed. A spokesperson for The Highland Council said: “Over a number of years we have carried out surveys and maintenance works on the Stromeferry bypass and we have identified an area of rock which presents a considerable risk to both the road and railway.  We are using a planned rail closure to carry out our works to ensure the safety of the travelling public. We understand that the closure of the road is inconvenient for road users but we are carrying out this work over the weekend to reduce delays to a minimum.”
