City roads to close for detailed Clock Tower inspection.
The Highland Council is notifying motorists, cyclists and motor cyclists that various temporary road closures will take place on Sunday 27 September between 6am and 3pm in Inverness city centre.
The temporary road closures will take place for public safety during a detailed inspection of the Clock Tower Steeple Building located on the corner of Church Street and Bridge Street.
Roads temporarily closed between 6am and 3pm (or at least until the inspection works are complete) on Sunday 27 September will include:
Alternative routes for vehicles will be available using Culduthel Road, View Place, Haugh Road, Ness Bank and Cavell Gardens, Castle Road and Bank Street.
The closures will affect vehicular traffic including cyclists and motor cyclists, but pedestrian access and access for emergency vehicles will be maintained at all times.
High winds on Tuesday 8 September, brought a report of fallen masonry from the Clock Tower and The Highland Council cordoned off the corner of Church Street and Bridge Street to pedestrians, then installed a covered walkway for public safety while steeple jack experts were commissioned to inspect the steeple.
Further detailed inspections are now required, and the best means of access to higher parts of the tower is by crane. In order to use and operate the crane effectively and safely this requires temporary road closures.
