Celtic Games to be held in Kinlochleven

Children from primary schools in South Lochaber will be joining together this week to take part in a Festival of Celtic Games on Wednesday 30 September.

The event which will be held on the new Astro Pitch and sports hall at the Leven Centre, Kinlochleven will feature football, rugby and shinty.

Eighty five primary 5, 6 and 7 pupils from Kinlochleven, Ballachulish, St Brides, Duror and Glencoe Primary Schools will be taking part in coaching sessions led by regional sports development managers.

Brian Bell, Highlands and Islands Rugby Development Manager; Peter Budge, SFA / HFA Football Development Officer; and Ronald Ross, Highland Shinty Development Officer will be leading the coaching sessions.

The event is organised by Highland Council’s Active Schools Co-ordinators who aim to offer children the motivation and opportunities to ‘get active’.

Leader of The Highland Council’s Administration Councillor Michael Foxley said: “Encouraging our children to be more active more often from an early age is vital to their long term health and fitness. Instilling an active interest in team sports can keep people active in sport throughout their lives. I particularly welcome the coaching sessions in shinty which not only support health and fitness activities but also the cultural heritage of our area.”

The Celtic Games are part of the Highland Promise 2007 legacy.
