Lochaber pupils get a taste for golf at the Dragon’s Tooth Course

Over 50 primary school children took part in the first South Lochaber Golf Festival on 15 April 2010 at Dragon's Tooth Golf Course.

The pupils in primaries 6 and 7 from Ballachulish, Kinlochleven, Duror, Glencoe and St Brides Primary Schools took part in putting, chipping and pitching workshops.

Also on offer was a session on golf etiquette and behaviour led by green keeper David Lawrence. Two fun competitions of ‘putting’ and ‘closest to the pin’ were also keenly enjoyed.

Tracey Jeffrey, Highland Council’s Active Schools Co-ordinator said: “The festival was a great opportunity for pupils to develop their skills on a real golf course and to access sports facilities in their local area. Thank you to the Dragon’s Tooth Golf Course for being so accommodating, to Councillor Bren Gormley for awarding the prizes and to the volunteers and coaches who led the sessions.”

Recent owner of the Dragon's Tooth Golf Course Laurence Young said: “For our young people, golf is a superb way to engage in sport, to enjoy the outdoors and to keep fit.  It’s so good to see this number of local primary school children getting a first flavour of the fairways and we are really indebted to Highland Council’s Active Schools co-ordinators for organizing the “taster” session.  We hope that many of those who come today will want to play more golf, and join in the weekly classes on offer from the Dragon’s Tooth Golf Club.”
