Culloden Academy to remain closed tomorrow

Culloden Academy in Inverness will remain closed tomorrow (Wednesday 25 August) to all pupils following a kitchen fire early this morning.

It had been hoped that the school would reopen tomorrow but repairs to the ventilation system are required and air quality checks completed following the fire.

An update on the situation will be issued tomorrow afternoon. Culloden community complex operations remain unaffected and the sports area and swimming pool will remain open as normal for evening sessions. Senior citizens swimming will also go ahead as usual.

The awards ceremony for S4 pupils due to take place this evening has been postponed and a new date will be arranged early in the term.

Rector Stephen Dowds said: “An early morning fire in our school kitchen was dealt with very effectively by Highland & Islands Fire Brigade. There is significant damage to the kitchen area and catering equipment.

“Smoke and fumes were extensive throughout the upper floor of the school. Work on the ventilation systems to ensure the air quality of the building has taken place today and will continue tomorrow to ensure a safe environment is established for pupils and staff to be able return to work.”

On behalf of The Highland Council Mr Dowds apologised for any inconvenience to pupils and parents and thanked them for their assistance.
