The Highland Council goes Bats for Fairtrade

The Highland Council has enlisted the help of two “bats” taking part in the Eden Court pantomime Beauty and the Beast to launch their bid to make the Highlands a Fairtrade Zone.

Jennifer Scott and Mairi Keen, both from Millburn Academy, took time off rehearsals for the panto to help Council Convener Sandy Park and Councillor Hamish Wood, Chairman of the Council’s Fairtrade Group, promote the launch of a new leaflet “Let’s make the Highlands a Fairtrade Zone”. 

Councillor Wood explained that to become a Fairtrade Zone it is necessary to demonstrate that communities, groups, organisations and businesses support Fairtrade. 

He said: “The purpose of the leaflet is to help us set up a Fairtrade directory, which will detail Fairtrade activity throughout the Highlands. So I would really encourage any group or organisation - no matter how big or small - to let us know of their Fairtrade activity.” 

Leaflets are being distributed to libraries, schools, service points, businesses, public agencies and voluntary groups. It is also available to download from the Council’s website. 

Councillor Park, added: “There is already huge support for Fairtrade in the Highlands. However, we are keen to do more and this is why I am delighted that the Council is supporting the Highlands becoming a Fairtrade Zone.”
