Pupils study the police force for Duke of Edinburgh Awards

Organised by Northern Constabulary’s P.C. Leesa Gunn, ten pupils will take part in the Police Service Course over the next 12 weeks. Other specialist officers will assist P.C. Gunn on the course covering most aspects of Police work.

At the course induction, Chief Inspector John MacDonald introduced the course to the pupils and said: "I am pleased that you have chosen the Police as your Service part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. I hope this will help you to learn more about the Police and to understand what we do and why we do it."

Chief Inspector MacDonald hopes to meet again the ten boys on the completion of the course, which will also qualify for the Service Section of the Bronze Level of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The group in Wick High School is led by Pupil Support Auxiliary, Jane Wedderburn, and supported by Diane Gibson, Development Officer for Caithness, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

The ten Wick pupils are working towards their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award through the New Start Project which works across ten local authorities in Scotland and uses the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as a way to promote positive activities and raise the esteem of young people.

Development Officer, Diane Gibson of the New Start Wick High School Group of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award said: "In Caithness, we are very committed to extending the reach of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award to give every young person a chance to develop individual skills that will serve them well in today's society."

The New Start Project is financially supported by the North British Hotels Group.

At present The Highland Council has 23 schools operating the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award directly with their pupils, 3,000 of whom are participating in the Award in Highland.
