Pirates, Ship Wrecks, Giant Sea Snakes At Reiss Beach
Youngsters’ imaginations ran riot last Thursday during the Reiss beach Sea Sculpture Competition. Art forms of all sorts were sculpted into the sand and decorated the length of the beach.
The competition was organised by the Highland Council Planning and Development Service’s Countryside Rangers as part of the Children’s Holiday Nature Club.
The sculptures included jelly fish, ship wrecks, lizards, donuts, dolphins, castles, pyramids, turtles, star fish, dragons and many more interesting exhibits.
The judge for the day was Mr Ian Mackenzie who found the judging a difficult task with such a variety of fantastic sculptures to choose from.
First prize for the family group went to the Pirate sculpture designed by Abigail Hughes, Eva Malcolm, Evelyn and Hanna Tait. The under 12’s competition was won by Becky Wymer and Ellie Corner with their sculpture of a snake and nest. A beautiful otter was sculpted by Alison Sinclair who impressed the judge and took the first prize in the over 12’s contest. Finally, the adult competition was won by Allan Fransham who designed part of a castle.
Marina Swanson, East Caithness ranger and sculpture competition organiser said:
"We were amazed with the amount of effort everyone put into their sculptures and were most impressed with the final products. It was a shame that the sculptures were lost with the tide as they made an impressive impact on the beach. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to Ian for undertaking the difficult job of judging."
