Fact finding visit to RAF Kinloss
The Convener of The Highland Council, Sandy Park, yesterday visited RAF Kinloss to be briefed on the current and future role of the base. The Convener was accompanied by the Chairman of the Planning, Environment and Development Committee, Councillor Ian Ross, and the Director of Planning and Development, Stuart Black. The visit was arranged in order to develop a closer working relationship between the Council and RAF Kinloss, as well as giving both parties a better understanding of the other’s role.
The Councillors were briefed by Wing Commander Rob Wigham, Officer Commanding 42 (R) Squadron about the challenges facing RAF Kinloss during its forthcoming transformation, with the arrival of the MRA4. A tour around a Nimrod MR2 followed and the visitors had a chance to test their skills in the MRA4 Simulator, which puts the aircrew through their paces in a virtual setting.
Group Captain Robbie Noel said: “Although RAF Kinloss falls within the boundaries of Moray, many people who work at the base live in the Highlands and so the forging of closer links is important to both organisations. This is the perfect opportunity to extend the hand of friendship whilst we better understand each other’s role in day to day life in the north of Scotland.”
Thanking the Station Commander and his colleagues for arranging the visit, Councillor Sandy Park said: “It has been an excellent opportunity to fully appreciate the contribution that the personnel and their families make to the local communities in Moray and the Highlands, as well as gaining an insight into the issues facing the base as it makes the transition to the new Nimrod aircraft.
“We very much recognise the enduring and close relationship that Moray Council has with RAF Kinloss, and we at The Highland Council are keen to assist in any way we can to ensure that RAF Kinloss has a secure and long term future as a front line station.”
