Highland winter road condition report for Wednesday 6 January

Skye and Lochalsh
Further Snow shower overnight in north skye, this with already frozen icy roads causing hazardous conditions. Priority 1 routes treated however with freezing road surface temperatures road still white behid gritter, re-treating these again. Priority 2 routes as per P1 Routes. No Priority 3 or 4 routes started due to the above roads taking priority to clear. B885 Struan hill Road Closed. C58 Quirang Closed

Lochaber
Across the area, snow was falling in flurries accumulating 3” -5” of depth overnight with some blizzard conditions on exposed areas. Some roads in the west still have 2.5 cm lying on them not long after having just been cleared - these are being treated again.  Air temperatures ranging between -3 and -11. Priority 1’s and 2’s are clear and passable with care throughout the area. No major problems reported.  Working through priority 3’s and 4’s. Also, now clearing roads and footways serving vulnerable people in areas of highest priority as requested – Grounds Maintenance and Street Sweeping Operatives mainly concentrated efforts on these.  Have also begun clearing school car parks and playgrounds prior to Monday 11th Jan when schools return.

Nairn
Only a little snow overnight, hand about 3" of snow in east of area yesterday afternoon (hailstones). Wind has died down overnight and still have roads to clear of drifts. Have opened A939 and B9007 to Badenoch boundaries where snow gates are closed. Gritting roads by priority with mix.

Badenoch and Strathspey
Around 2-5cm fresh snow overnight. Heavy drifting. B9007, A939 Dava, & A939 Bridge of Brown all still closed. Currently working on Bridge of Brown. Drifting on A938 cleared. About to work on A939 Dava. Treating all routes by priority. Still one lorry broken down. Contractors attending to town centres and vulnerable housing, & large tractor with v-plough helping to open up some roads with new accumulations of snow on deep packed snow. With no thaw and continuing showers lying snow on untreated ground is still over 60cm. Large build up of icicles on high street buildings. Opened up Station Road Carrbridge to improve access to rail disaster.

Ross and Cromarty
No fresh overnight snow reported. Some drifting on higher routes. Frozen slush,ice and hard packed snow affecting many routes including footpaths. Continuing to treat all routes by priority. Bealach and Diabaig route closed.

A836 Lairg to Tongue now open passable with care. Operations continuing to try and open other closed roads. Snow blower mobilised to rescue gritter stuck on B871

All P1s & P2s treated this morning with 50:50 salt:sand mix.
Continuing treatment on P3s & P4s, with hired JCBs to break up hard packed ice.
All actions continuing throughout the day.

Inverness 
Roads at all levels affected by frozen slush / ice, some remnants of yesterday’s drifts on higher ground to be dealt with. Down to one lane at Moy. Tomatin atrocious - main road open but having some difficulty with side roads. Coignafearn blocked despite attempts with digger to clear snow. B862 Calanour - Ft Augustus road affected by drifts, slow progress being made to clear but efforts will continue today once P1&2 routes have been treated
