A proposal to establish Gaelic Medium education provision at Glen Urquhart Primary School in Drumnadrochit took a step forward this week.
At The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee members were informed about the outcome of a recent statutory consultation on the proposal to establish Gaelic Medium provision at the school.
Members were advised that all responses to the consultation received were supportive and that a number requested that Gaelic Medium education be provided from August 2010.
Members agreed that an outline business case for the provision of additional classroom accommodation for Gaelic Medium education at Glen Urquhart Primary should by produced.
Hugh Fraser, Highland Council’s Director of Education, Culture and Sport Service explained that the outline business case will be reviewed as part of the Council’s Capital Programme and considered at a future meeting of the full Highland Council.
Members also agreed that further work in relation to pre-school Gaelic Medium provision will be progressed in conjunction with all stakeholders including Glen Urquhart Childcare Centre.
Local Highland Councillor Margaret Davidson said: “There is huge support to bring back Gaelic to the Glen. We have a group of young families willing to take up this mantle. The community is being thoughtful and careful of how we can take forward Gaelic pre-school provision and they are mindful of how this might be incorporated into existing provision. I commend the ‘Gaelic in the Glen’ group as they have done so much to get to the stage we are at now.”
