Ardersier veteran receives medal from St Valery-en-Caux

An Ardersier veteran has received a medal for his service in the 51st Highland Division when he fought alongside French forces at the battle of Saint Valery-en-Caux in 1940.

Donnie Ross (93) was presented with the medal from Provost of Inverness Jimmy Gray on behalf of the Mayor of Saint Valery-en-Caux M. Gerard Mauger.

Provost Gray recently represented Inverness and the Highlands at a commemorative ceremony for the 70th anniversary of the battle of June 1940 in Saint Valery-en- Caux. He took with him a DVD that captures Donnie Ross’s experiences in St Valery-en-Caux 70 years ago. Donnie’s recording was presented to the Mayor for their collection of military history.

As Mr Ross was unable to attend the anniversary event at Inverness’s twin town, the Mayor of St Valery-en-Caux wrote to the Provost of Inverness asking him to present on his behalf the Medal of the City of St Valery-en-Caux as proof of the city’s eternal gratitude.

Provost Gray said: “I am extremely delighted and humbled to present this medal to Donnie Ross from the Mayor of St Valery-en-Caux. It comes with deep appreciation from those in France who remember the allied soldiers who served so valiantly for the cause of freedom.”
