Am Baile transports you through time
The Highland Council's Highland history and culture website, “Am Baile”, is displaying a photographic exhibition of old images on 'Transport through the ages' from Monday 2nd August in Inverness Museum and Art Gallery.
The exhibition features items from the many and varied online collections published on Am Baile including some wonderful photographs from the collections held by Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and the Highland Photographic Archive.
Visitors will get a glimpse of the different forms of transport used in the past, some of which are still in use today. The images will showcase the heritage and culture of the area and be of interest to both the local community and tourists.
Maggie Johnstone from Am Baile said: "To add to the collection we would like to ask the public to help create a record of memories and stories about travel in the past. We could record their oral or written stories about how they moved around the Highlands in their everyday life. For example, did they cycle to work, take the ferry, or walk? Perhaps they travelled in a more unusual way? How were goods delivered?.”
Anyone interested in recording their story should get in touch with a member of the Am Baile team who will be in attendance at the museum each Wednesday throughout August between 2 pm and 4 pm.
The exhibition will be displayed in the community space in the museum entrance and will run until the end of August.
Another exhibition is planned at the Eden Court Theatre in September.
The Am Baile website, www.ambaile.org.uk, managed by Highland Libraries, has become the major online resource for exploring the rich heritage of the Highlands and Islands and is available in English and Gaelic.
