A special visitor calls in at Hickory Dickory nursery

As part of the continuous drive to encourage everyone in the Highlands to recycle more of their waste, the Council’s Waste Awareness team recently visited the Hickory Dickory nursery group in Inverness to raise awareness about the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message.

The children took part in a waste awareness session led by Paula Williams, Waste Awareness Assistant.  The session included a discussion about the importance of recycling and how to recycle at home using the blue box and brown bin kerbside recycling service.  They also listened to a story about the types of material that can be recycled and how to compost fruit and vegetable peelings. 

Paula said: “Communicating waste and recycling messages by reading a story is a great way of engaging with nursery children.  It’s a fun and interactive way to help them understand the importance of recycling”. 

To the children’s delight Compost the Cow, the Highland recycling mascot made a surprise guest appearance.  He spent time playing with the children and they had an opportunity to take a photo with him.       

Paula added:  “Inviting Compost to come along to nursery sessions is a fantastic way to create an impact with the kids.  This hopefully persuades them to spread the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message when they go home which in turn influences parents to think about their waste and recycle as much as they can by using the Council’s recycling services.”
