Highland riders Youth Dirt Crit results

Highland riders shone among the 120 riders who recently took part in the 2010 Scottish Cycling Youth Dirt Crit at the Mountain Biking World Cup in Fort William

The event which took place on the 5th June attracted riders from all over Scotland to compete in U10, U12, U14 and U16 age categories.

The event was organised by Scottish Cycling with help from The Highland Councils Active School’s team.

The course involved completing multiple loops of a short cross country course, starting and finishing in the main stadium area.  Each lap took riders between 1-2 minutes to complete, leading to lots of action packed into a small area, and constant entertainment as riders overtook each other and jostled for position.

Right from the start, Highland riders proved to be hard to beat, with Ruairidh Cant from Upper Achintore Primary, Fort William taking 1st place in the U10’s category and Sam Connelly from Cawdor Primary taking second place.

Megan Daynes from St. Brides Primary, Onich then rode to 2nd in the U10 girl’s competition.  Lochaber youngsters also secured two 3rd place medals, with Tom MacMohan from St Brides’ Primary in the U14’s and Connor MacCallum in the U16’s category. Thomas Van Holten of Dornoch Academy took first place in the boys U14 class, and Ella Conelly of Cawdor Primary also took first place in the girls U12.

Bridget Thomas, Highland Council’s Active Schools Co-ordinator said: “Congratulations to all the Highland pupils who secured victories for their schools and to everyone for taking part. It was fantastic to see such passion and enthusiasm for mountain biking among our young riders – it’s easy to see that we have some adult stars in the making in the Highlands.”
