Skye and Lochalsh - Environment Fun Days 2010

The Highland Council and National Trust for Scotland Countryside Rangers are hosting two Environment Fun Days for primary school pupils in Skye and Lochalsh in March 2010.

The events will take place in Kyleakin Village Hall - Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th March. Over the two days 15 schools will be taking part with 250 children joining in! The theme for the two days is Wildlife Crime.   Wildlife Crime is a real and current threat in Skye and Lochalsh, and we believe this event, which will cover some hot topics locally, will be a timely and important reminder to local children why we need to work to protect the wonderful natural heritage we are blessed with in Skye and Lochalsh.

Representatives of the International Otter Survival Fund, Bat Conservation Trust, Mammal Society, Hunterian Museum, National Trust for Scotland, Hebridean Whale & Dolphin Trust, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Scottish Natural Heritage and Highland Council Rangers will be presenting activities on the theme of Wildlife Crime on the days.

Ed Fraser, Northern Constabulary’s Wildlife Crime Officer for Skye and Lochalsh will launch the two events which have been made possible by grant support from SNH, and many of the professionals are giving their time voluntarily.

Scottish Natural Heritage's Wildlife Crime trailer will be on site as well as a representative from Eco-schools Scotland.

Each day, the schools present will compete in a ‘No Waste Lunch’ competition.  The organisers will weigh the rubbish accumulated by every school group over lunch-time.  There will be a prize for to the class that weighs in the lightest.
