Youth Orchestra to perform in Alness
Romeo and Juliet by Tchaikovsky and the theme from Angela’s Ashes are just two of the pieces the Highland Regional Youth Orchestra will be performing during a concert in Alness on Saturday 20 March.
The Orchestra draws together some of the most talented musicians from throughout the area, and gives them the opportunity to play in a full symphony orchestra. The concert, to be held at the Averon Leisure Centre, will feature solos by two young cellists who have both won the title of Highland Young Musician of the Year.
David Bühl, a pupil at Charleston Academy in Inverness won the title in 2009. Robin Nelson from Fortrose Academy was the 2008 Highland Young Musician of the Year and they will be performing Vivaldi’s Double Cello Concerto in G minor.
The Highland Council’s Music Development Officer, Norman Bolton said: “The programme for this concert has been chosen to include many pieces which will be recognisable by the audience yet will still provide an appropriate challenge for the talented young musicians. For many of the players this will be their last Concert with any of the Groups as they prepare to leave school and it is gratifying to know that their Regional Groups membership will have given them immense enjoyment; confidence and experiences which will hold them in good stead no matter what their futures hold.”
Tickets cost £8 for adults and £4 for pupils and are now available by telephoning Angeline Walker on 01349 863441.
The Highland Regional Youth Orchestra is one of seven Regional MusicGroups run as an extension to the work of the Instrumental Tuition Service in Highland. Membership for all the Groups is by audition and it’s expected that this years Audition Day on Saturday 29th May will attract somewhere in the region of 300 applicants for places in all the Groups.
