Highland outlines waste awareness campaign for 2010/11

A campaign aimed at encouraging Highland householders to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste has received continued support from members of The Highland Council’s TEC Services Committee.

Commending the efforts of a six-strong team of waste awareness staff Councillor John Laing, Chairman of the Council’s TEC Services Committee said: “Our officers do a magnificent job educating people of all ages about how to deal with their waste. They achieve this in a variety of ways including direct marketing and advertising, attending community fairs and shows and working with schools. Their plan for the coming year has some great ideas in it to get the waste message across.”

Colin Clark, Highland Council’s Head of Waste Management outlined the achievements of the campaign over the last year and highlighted future awareness raising activities planned for the year 2010/11.

Activities planned for the coming year will include a youth film competition aimed at 11-16 year olds and a ‘door knocking’ campaign in the summer to target the areas with poor participation in the blue box scheme. There will also be a specific campaign focussed on reducing food waste, and an environmental awareness event on 4 June involving Highland Council staff and Members.

Recycling centre campaigns will take place in spring and autumn, and businesses will be encouraged to take part in the recycling permit scheme through a commercial recycling promotion.
