Boost For Recycling In Lochaber

Boost for Recycling In Lochaber

The Highland Council’s new Recycling Centre serving Lochaber was officially opened yesterday (Tuesday 18th April 2006). Local Councillors and members of the Council’s Waste Strategy Sub-Committee were on hand to witness the opening of the new site. The Centre located on the Ben Nevis Industrial Estate will be open seven days a week from 10am to 5pm April to September and 10am to 4pm October to March.

This Centre is another piece in the Highland recycling jig-saw. Together with the kerbside collection of paper and garden waste in Fort William and the expansion of the Recycling Point network this facility will help everyone in Lochaber contribute to the challenging recycling rate of 18% that is set for the Council.

During the official opening Councillor Brian Murphy said: ""I am delighted that householders in and around Fort William now have a purpose-built facility to take their recycling waste to. People can bring along a wide range of items and the more we can recycle, the less ends up going to our landfill sites. I hope as many people as possible take advantage of this new excellent facility."

The Recycling Centre was constructed under a partnership agreement with the site occupier, Lochaber Aggregates and landowners Alcan. The facility now offers Lochaber householders the opportunity to recycle a vast array of household items. Materials that can be recycled include garden waste, soil, rubble, scrap metal, cardboard, tyres, white goods and car batteries.

Paper, tins, cans and glass that can be recycled at local Recycling Points can also be taken to the new Recycling Centre. In addition, furniture can be donated to LEG (Lochaber Environmental Group) for reuse by using the container provided at the Centre.

It is envisage that 1000 Tonnes of material will pass through the site annually and the recycling rate is expected to be around 65%. Members of the public using the site are asked to assist in making the site run efficiently by segregating their items for recycling before arriving at site.

Due to the introduction of this new service the Fort William Mobile Skip Service ceased with effect from Saturday, 15th April 2006.
