Highland Schools Race Series
The sun shone on Nevis Range Fort William (Saturday 8 May 2010) for the 3rd round of the Highland School bike race series. The event shared the same weekend as The British National Series Downhill race and the Scottish Six Day Trials creating a great atmosphere.
With 42 riders in attendance racing started with the under 8’s going for a flying 1 lap race. Ronnie Fulford from Spean Bridge took the win with Cameron Fraser in 2nd and Owen Pescod 3rd
In the under 10’s race it was a closely fought battle for 3 laps between Ruaridh Cant and Jamie Edmonson. But Ruaridh managed to pull ahead to take the win with Jamie in 2nd place and Roddy MacDonald in 3rd. Megan Daynes was the first girl to cross the line with Robin MacMahon 2nd.
With another big turn out the under 12’s race saw some fast riding with quite a few riders jostling for the lead into the first section of single track. 5 laps later and it was Fredrick Ewers who crossed the line followed close behind by Tom MacMahon in 2nd and Jack McCallum 3rd. In the girls race it was a team affair with all 3 riders from the Wolfpax club. Rona Strivens managed to break away and take the win with Erin Mosedell 2nd and Cara Melton 3rd.
The under 14’s and under 16’s finished of the days racing battling it out for 15 minutes to try and complete as many laps of the short course as possible. First Under 14 across the line was Ash Mosedell with Thomas Van Holten 2nd and Calum Fraser 3rd. In the under 16’s race Scott Sutherland charged ahead completing 13 laps to take the win with Sam Johnstone 2nd and Andrew Kenyon.
Bridget Thomas Highland Council’s Active Schools coordinator said: “It was great to see so many children out enjoying the sun soaking up the atmosphere in the car park and getting a 1st taste of racing. Our special thanks go to Nevis Range and the Forestry Commission for use of the car park and trails on the day.”
