Volunteer efforts at Reiss Beach

A Caithness beach access area got an environmental tidy yesterday (Sunday 23 May 2010) thanks to members of the Caithness Countryside Volunteers group.

A variety of jobs were carried out at the access to Reiss Beach by the volunteers including: clearing sand and overgrown vegetation from the access steps; painting a hand rail and litter picking in the car park and beach area.

Attempts were also made to stabilise loose sand on the banks of the burn area. The volunteers planted marram grass along the worst affected areas to try to hold the sand in place and to reduce the bank erosion.

The event was organised by Highland Council’s Countryside Ranger as part of the Caithness Countryside programme of events, and funded through the Community Service Volunteers Action Earth supported by Morrisons supermarkets.

Marina Swanson, East Caithness Ranger and event organiser said: “The volunteers did a great job on Sunday improving the access point to Reiss beach. Many thanks to those who turned out on the day and to Action Earth for funding the project.”
