Civic Bonfire and Fireworks Display

The second event of the 2010 Inverness Winter Festival takes place this Friday (November 5th) when the award winning Inverness Civic Bonfire and Fireworks Display takes place at Bught Park.

A crowd in excess of 10,000 plus is expected to attend this event which will feature a performance by the Falcon Group Drummers in the grandstand at 7pm.

The 40ft bonfire, which will form the centrepiece of the show, will be lit at 7.30pm by Provost Jimmy Gray, chairman of The Highland Council’s Inverness City Committee, who will be assisted by young Brian Mcleod who won the competition to lead the crowd in the countdown to the start of the Fireworks Display at approximately 7.50pm.

This year’s fireworks display will be presented by the Fireworx Scotland Display Team led Steve Grant who has promised that the show will feature a number of new effects that have not been seen in Scotland before and are guaranteed to delight the crowd. As usual the music which will accompany the display is a closely guarded secret that will only be revealed on the night.

From 6pm to 9pm a temporary one way traffic restriction will be on place on Bught Drive, Bught Avenue and a section of Bught Road. Traffic will also be unable to use sections of Bught Road and Ness Walk between the junction with Bught Avenue and the junction with Ballifeary Lane.  Pedestrian access will be maintained and alternative routes for vehicles will be sign-posted.

With car parking in the Bught area extremely limited due to the road closures required to accommodate the spectators and the wet ground conditions, the organisers have announced that car parking spaces will only be provided for Disabled Drivers who are asked to use the car park that will be created near the grandstand at Bught Park. Access to the Disabled Car Park is via Torvean Avenue and only blue badge displaying Disabled Drivers will be able to use this facility on the night.

The display organisers have issued an appeal to all other spectators intending to travel to the show by car to make sure that they allow themselves plenty of time to park away from the site and arrive in good time for the start of the show at 7.30pm.

There will be a limited number of spaces available at Charleston Academy or alternatively drivers can use the existing city centre car parks.  Existing parking restrictions and charges will apply.

The Inverness Civic Bonfire and Fireworks Display is sponsored by the Inverness Common Good Fund with support from Northern Constabulary and the Highlands and Islands Fire Rescue Service as part of the Highland Council’s efforts to make every November 5 a night to remember with pleasurable instead of painful memories.

Since local authorities and the emergency services across the United Kingdom started working with local communities to stage organised displays there has been a substantial drop in the number of firework related injuries reported by the NHS.
