Temporary arrangements introduced at Corran Ferry.
Temporary arrangements will be introduced tomorrow (Tuesday) to ensure a service is maintained on the Corran Ferry while essential work begins on the refurbishment of the slipway at Nether Lochaber.
A floating pier has been installed at Nether Lochaber to replace the slipway, which will remain out of commission until early December.
The car ferry, the Maid of Glencoul, will begin its daily routine from Ardgour at 7.30 am and continue in operation until the last journey of the day from Nether Lochaber at 7 pm.
Initially, a 3-tonne weight restriction will remain in place.
Local Highland Councillor Michael Foxley said he is pleased that trials held over the past few days have been successful, enabling the temporary service to begin tomorrow morning.
He said: “This is a unique solution. It will allow the ferry to continue operations whilst we carry out absolutely essential repairs to the Nether Lochaber slipway. This is a big investment for the local communities.”
He said the Council would be inviting the Health and Safety Executive and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to visit the site with a view to relaxing the 3-tonne weight restriction on the floating pier and allow night operation of the ferry.
He also paid tribute to local landowner Miss Morag McIntosh for all her assistance in making land available for the temporary slipway. Her late father ran the Corran Ferry service privately before the Council took over the lifeline service.
