Rangers explore mystery of Highland Bronze Age site

People intrigued by the enduring mystery of Clava Cairns are being invited to join Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers on an interactive event during the Highland Archaeology Festival.

On Wednesday 13 October, John Orr, Countryside Ranger for Inverness East and Nairn will be introducing the event with some of his colleagues dressed in Bronze Age costume. They will be delving into the mysterious past of this intriguing and unique site.

Clava Cairns is the site of an exceptionally well preserved group of prehistoric burial cairns that were built about 4,000 years ago. This Bronze Age cemetery includes passage graves; ring cairns, kerb cairn, and standing stones all in a rural location near to Culloden Battlefield.

Highland Council’s Countryside Ranger John Orr said: “This is going to be a hands-on kind of event which will appeal to people of all ages. We will be trying to answer some of the questions about what this place was used for as well as giving people the opportunity to dig for artefacts, try a bit of bronze age crafts and who knows, maybe you’ll get to meet one or two of your ancestors!”   

This event is organised as part of The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Services countryside events programme.  This is suitable for individuals and family groups.
