Floral Judges to Visit Alness

Monday 14 August will be a big day for Alness as the Judges from Britain in Bloom and the judging team from Beautiful Scotland in Bloom will visit the town.

In the morning David Jones OBE and Doug Stacey, both very experienced judges, will be judging Alness for the Britain in Bloom Champion of Champion competition.
In the afternoon they will be joined by the Beautiful Scotland in Bloom team of judges which include Roddy Shanks, Alasdair Barnard, Gordon Manson and Rachel Nugent.

Extra interest has been created this year during the judging day as two TV crews will be filming in the town.

One crew are from the BBC Beechgrove Garden programme and the other crew are from community TV who have been working on a documentary over the last three months.  Both programmes will be aired after the presentation of the Awards for Beautiful Scotland in Bloom on 13th September in Dunfermline and Britain in Bloom in Perth on 21st September.

This year’s theme for both the competitions is Biodiversity.  Councillor Carolyn Wilson said:  “The judges will not only be looking at floral displays but also permanent planting, cleanliness, sustainability and ways in which the community gets involved.”

During the tour by the judging teams two special projects will be highlighted.  Pupils from Obsdale Primary school have been busy creating a selection of  eye-catching Totem poles and a “Centipede” made from washing machine drums now takes pride of place in a field of wild flowers.
