Council and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig reach Memorandum of Understanding
The Highland Council and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig College on the Isle of Skye have signed an agreement which will provide the basis to take forward their mutual aims, interests and expertise in the Gaelic language.
A Memorandum of Understanding has reinforced both organisations’ commitments to strengthen their partnership working on Gaelic in areas including: education; research and knowledge exchange; the visual arts and drama; literature; film; oral heritage; topographical naming; broadcasting, and in music.
Signing the agreement this week in Inverness, Professor Boyd Robertson, Principal of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig said: “We are pleased to cement our relationship with The Highland Council through this Memorandum of Understanding. There has been a history of fruitful collaboration between the Council and the College and the MOU provides a framework within which we can forge an even stronger and more productive partnership.”
Also signing the agreement, Chief Executive of The Highland Council, Alistair Dodds added: “I am delighted that The Highland Council and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig have signed this Memorandum of Understanding. This reaffirms our commitment to, and promotion of, Gaelic within education, the creative arts and heritage industries. Both the Council and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig with its internationally recognised status as a national centre for the Gaelic language and culture are dedicated to the future development of the Gaelic language.”
Councillor Hamish Fraser Chairman of the Council’s Gaelic Committee and members of the committee have welcomed the signing of the MOU and a draft project plan for 2011-12 which will reinforce the MOU. The plan includes:
The Council will also work in partnership with the wide range of facilities and organisations based at SMO such as: Tobar an Dualchais (Kist ‘o’ Riches); Ainmean Àite na h-Alba (AAA); Sealladh; FilmG; Soillse; the Gaelic Dictionary Project, and SMO’s Short Course organiser.
