Library dates for Lochcarron based award winning writer

Award winning writer, John McMillan, will be visiting Lochcarron and Portree libraries at the start of next month for special “Meet the Author” session.

On Monday 5 September at 7.30pm in Lochcarron Library and Wednesday 7 September, from 7.30pm in Portree Library, the former Rector of Invergordon Academy will provide some rare, personal insights into the lives and cultures of people in far off places.

 Following the death of his wife and his retirement, John, set off on his travels and the resulting book  “The Virgin Backpacker – You Are Never Too Old”, is his amusing account taking the reader from the perplexing way of life in the USA to the paradise islands of the Pacific Ocean, Australia, Patagonia and Antarctica.

Now based at Lochcarron, John has established a reputation as a world traveller, lecturer, writer, scuba diver and underwater photographer who has been filmed diving and talking about his photographs on Philippines TV.
His illustrated travel talks in Scotland and in several locations abroad during his travels have impressed audiences with the quality of his photographs and informative commentary.

A prize-winning writer in the Neil Gunn Short Story Competition in 1996, John was also awarded second prize in a short story competition organised by Age Concern Scotland in 2005. His two other books, From The Dafter Edges of Absurdity which appeared in 1998 to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief and A Century of Sail to commemorate the centenary of Invergordon Boating Club in 2001 have also been well received.
