Additional temporary road closure as work continues on A855 Portree to Staffin

The Highland Council are currently carrying out the third phase of improvement works to the A855 Staffin road between Portree and Loch Fada.  Road users are being advised that an additional temporary road closure is necessary later this month to allow for the next stage of work to convert the existing road to twin track width.

Since the 5th January temporary road closures have been running along a section of the A855 from Mondays to Thursdays from 11:15 to 12:45, and 13:30 to 16:00.  These restrictions are set to continue until the 24th March 2011.  In addition there will to be another temporary closure on Saturday 19 February 2011, between 8am and 6pm to allow for the installation of a 1200mm diameter concrete culvert.

On this date only, southbound traffic will be stopped at Loch Fada, and northbound traffic at the Torvaig junction from 8am to 6pm. Access for all vehicles will be permitted as far as Torvaig from Portree during this period.

An alternative route for Staffin traffic will be available via the A87 Uig road but drivers are being advised that this route is not suitable for heavy good vehicles.

The Highland Council would like to thank the A855 road users for their cooperation and patience, and apologise for any inconveniences caused.
