Grantown schools scoop medals at Highland swim gala
Forty four swimmers from the Grantown cluster schools entered Highland schools swimming gala at the end of 2010.
The following swimmers received medals from Mrs Carson the Head Teacher of Grantown Grammar School. For the Grammar school, there were individual gold medals for Iain Mackellar, Ciara Peters, Eilidh Maclaren and Adam Barnett. Silver medals were presented to Alexandrea Macleod, Adam Barnett and Ciara Peters, and bronze for Eilidh Maclaren, Jessica Hart and Lewis Taylor.
The Boys 17-19 year old 4 x 50 metre freestyle relay team (Iain Mackellar, Callum Smith, Duncan Miller, and Alex Maclure) achieved bronze.
Grantown Primary also gained medals: an individual silver for Alex Philips and silver for the freestyle relay team (Ritchie Paton, Ryan Maclean, Sam Cooke and Alex Philip).
The event was a real team effort, with the schools, local Grantown swim club, Highland Active Schools Coordinators and volunteers all contributing to make it happen. Without the parents who helped look after the team, or held a timekeeping or officiating role, the swims could not take place.
Active Schools Coordinator Dawn Horsburgh said: “The swimmers performed really well, with Ciara and Iain qualifying for the Scottish schools event. It must be noted, that other swimmers in our schools achieved personal bests and others gained valuable competition experience.”
She added: “Special thanks go to Morag Macleod who helped link between the club and the Grammar School as well as doing an amazing job of managing the team on the day. It is also important to recognise the support of the parents that helped on the day too. It is great to see these club links continue to develop, and we look forward to continuing this strong tradition with swimmers from the cluster competing in next year’s event”
