Highland crew for 2011 Tall Ships races

In partnership with Ocean Young Trust, Young Scot and COSLA, The Highland Council will be sponsoring two young people from the Highlands to take part in the Tall Ship races held on the seas around the British Isles later this year.

Following a recent selection process Andrew Hughes (24) from Inverness and Dor Hyslop (16) from the Isle of Skye will be the crew members representing the Highlands. Both are delighted to have been chosen and are looking forward to their time on the ships.

Andrew said: “I could hardly believe my eyes when I received the letter of selection. It means so much to have been chosen for something so exciting.”

The Tall Ships races are an annual event and will be held in July and August 2011.  There are various European teams who will be entering the three racing legs of several hundred nautical miles, with each leg lasting around 10 days.

The races are designed to encourage international friendship and allow young people to experience adventure under sail. The three legs of the event are; (1) from Waterford, Ireland to Greenock; (2) from Lerwick to Stavanger, Norway, (3) and the final race from Stavanger to Halmstad, Sweden and a return voyage to Inverness.
