Keys handed over for new Inverness primary school

The keys to the new £7 million Milton of Leys Primary School, Inverness, were handed over by Morrison Construction to The Highland Council today (Monday) in time for the school opening on Tuesday 16 August when the new school session commences.

Initially, the school will welcome 190 Primary 1 - 7 pupils, as well as 64 nursery pupils, split into two morning sessions and one afternoon session.
The school features 11 classrooms, a community room and wraparound childcare. The school design is flexible, providing the option for further classrooms to be added in the future.

The catchment area includes the Milton of Leys and Dell of Inshes housing estates and P7 pupils will move up to Millburn Academy.

Provost Jimmy Gray, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Inverness City Committee, said: “The Highland Council is making this huge investment in the city of Inverness with this splendid new primary school., which commands marvellous views over the city and Beauly Firth.  The new building will not only offer a modern learning and teaching environment, but will also relieve the pressure on Inshes primary school.  It is a top quality facility which will meet the aspirations of the pupils, their families and the whole community.”

Donald McLachlan, Regional Director of Morrison Construction, said:
“There is a tremendous sense of pride within the company at handing over the new Milton of Leys Primary School today.  It is an outstanding facility and we are very proud of the quality of work we have produced.  It is an excellent demonstration of our capability in constructing educational developments and is the fifth new-build school that we have completed in Inverness in as many years.  Morrison Construction has unrivalled experience of building schools across the Highlands and consistently deliver a quality project on time and to budget.”

Head Teacher Robert Quigley said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be getting the keys to this amazing building, which the whole of the community of Milton of Leys has been eagerly awaiting. Everyone has been watching the building grow over the pasts 12 months and the pupils, parents and staff cannot wait for 16 August. The school blog has been a terrific way to capture the excitement and from the comments left on this, I am absolutely convinced that this building will become a school where exciting and innovative learning takes place every day.”

The school will be one of the first in the Highlands to have a wireless network solution built in throughout the school. This will allow pupils and staff to embed Mr Quigley’s vision for “any time” access to online learning.

Another feature is the multi use games arena, with an all-weather surface and floodlights which will be available for the community outwith school hours.
Every classroom opens up on to their own dedicated space outside. This is a decking area where teachers can extend the learning outwith the classroom and pupils can grow fruit, vegetables or plants in their own planters.
