Opening up canoeing in Caithness and North Sutherland

The Thurso-based Pentland Canoe Club has taken delivery of 4 open canoes along with associated equipment and a trailer thanks to support from the Awards For All Scotland programme and a Discretionary Ward Grant from The Highland Council.

The equipment was handed over to the Club by John Thurso MP and Councillor David Flear representing The Highland Council.

This equipment now allows the Pentland Canoe Club to be able to offer individuals and groups the opportunity to try open canoeing in the Caithness & North Sutherland area.

The canoes will enable the club to provide more opportunities for individuals to participate in paddlesport and allow the training and development of coaches.

Mark Cleminson, Chairman of the Club, said: “The members of the Pentland Canoe Club are veryappreciative of the generous funding that has been provided. The significant increase in the availability of open canoes will enable us to readily provide the training and experience that future club coaches require, as well as hopefully inspiring some of tomorrow’s paddlesport champions. Importantly, we will now also be able to offer a wider cross-section of the community the chance to take part in and enjoy this increasingly popular adventurous activity.”
