Alness Academy are the Young Engineers and Science Club of the Year 2011

A team of young budding scientists from Alness Academy are celebrating their success at winning the Young Engineers and Science Club of the Year 2011 Trophy.

Josie Tolliday, Holly Henderson, Emma Roddick, Katie Cooper, Kayleigh Macdoanld and Cassie Armstrong plus reserve Meg Beattie, all from S2 , gave their presentation  to a panel of judges at the Glasgow Science Centre.  Accompanying them were principle science teacher Liana Ballingall, principle geography teacher Alex Ferrie and janitor Eddie Malicki.

The team had to showcase their activities and explain their involvement in projects throughout the year.

Head teacher Ken MacIver and the rest of the school are delighted at the girls’ success.  “There were 400 initial entries and 50 schools attended the event in Glasgow” he said.  “The girls obviously made a real impression.  Their enthusiasm and confidence they displayed for the projects, along with their skills of communication, were quite outstanding.  It is a tremendous accolade for the work that’s been going on in the school and a credit to the team who obviously made a real impression with their presentation.”

Science and Engineering week is now a regular feature in the Alness Academy school calendar. Running very successfully for 5 years, it has covered a wide range of projects and this year the focus was on designing earthquake proof structures.   A team of staff from a number of departments including Geography; Geology; the Sciences and Technology have been involved in this cross-curricular project.

As well as picking up the top trophy, the young scientists were presented with £750 which will to go towards the Alness Academy Science & Engineering Club.
