New Director of Transport Environmental and Community Services

The Highland Council today (Friday) appointed a new Director of Transport Environmental and Community Services.

He is Neil Gillies, who has been acting Director for the past year, following the death of previous director Mary McLauchlan.

Mr Gillies joined the former Highland Regional Council in 1978 as a graduate engineer and has served continuously in local government in the Highlands.  He has served as a Principal Engineer in the Inverness Area and in 2002 was appointed Head of Roads and Community Services.

He is married to Christine and they have two daughters, Sarah and Kirsty, both currently living in New Zealand.

Transport Environmental and Community Services has a net revenue budget of £56 million and a capital budget of £13 million.

It is responsible for maintaining 4,132 miles of regional road network – the biggest area in Scotland - as well as 1,398 bridges.

Other services it provides are environmental health, waste management, recycling, civic amenity sites, trading standards, lighting, harbours, public conveniences, burial grounds and street lighting.
