Death of Highland Councillor Alan Torrance

Highland Councillor Alan Torrance, Tain and Easter Ross, has died at his home after a long illness at the age of 68.  

Councillor Torrance, who lived in Tain, leaves a wife, Susan and three children, Calum, Grant and Ellen. 

Councillor Torrance joined The Highland Council in 2003 and was re-elected as one of three ward members for Tain and Easter Ross in 2007.  He was a member of the SNP Group on the Council. 

He was also a member of the Cromarty Firth Port Authority. 

A chartered surveyor, he moved to the Highlands in 1975 when he formed the company, Alan Torrance Associates, Chartered Surveyors. He took a great interest in the breeding of Highland Cattle.  

Convener Councillor Sandy Park paid tribute to Councillor Torrance’s service to the Council over the past eight years. 

He said: “Alan was a very thoughtful and forthright man, who contributed greatly to the Council on a wide range of council issues.  He served his local community with great enthusiasm and always made a telling contribution at council meetings.  He bore his illness bravely and our thoughts at this time are with Susan and his children.” 

Councillor John Finnie, SNP, Leader of the Opposition, said: "Alan Torrance was a very popular and valued Member of the SNP Group and The Highland Council.  Alan always placed the people of Tain and Easter Ross as his number one priority and worked with everyone to ensure the maximum benefit for the communities he was proud to serve.  His considered contributions to debates and his warm personality will be sorely missed by everyone he encountered."

The funeral service will be held in Tain Parish Church on Friday 18 March at 10 a.m.
