New path improves access to Smithton Woods

An all-abilities footpath into Smithton Woods from Moray Road, Smithton, near Inverness has recently been completed.

The £4,400 project was funded by The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Service Capital Programme in support of sustainable access to the countryside.

John Orr, Highland Council’s Inverness East and Nairn Countryside Ranger, regularly uses Smithton Woods for guided walks and children’s activities throughout the Ranger events calendar. He said: “This new path has been built to replace the original entrance path to the Smithton Woods from Moray Road and avoids a steep slope, so enabling better access for people of all abilities. Now everyone can visit this beautiful little community woodland, whether just for some peace and quiet, or as an attractive through route.”

The aim of the Highland Council Countryside Rangers is to promote public enjoyment and appreciation of the countryside and to conserve wildlife. The Planning and Development Service Capital Programme is used to help build a competitive, sustainable and adaptable Highland economy and to help sustain Highland communities.
