Mural competition winners announced

The P4 class from Strathpeffer Primary School are the overall winners of The Highland Council’s Recycling Mural competition and will now see their award winning design produced as banners which will go on display at the Recycling Centres in Inverness, Dingwall, Tain and Alness.  

The competition run by the Council’s Recycling team proved to be very popular with 55 primary schools submitting a total of 119 entries, with a wide array of styles and ideas.

Chairman of the TEC Services Committee, Councillor John Laing was on the judging panel and was very impressed with the high standard of artwork produced all the pupils who took part.  He said:  “The creativity and imagination of the young people is incredible and all of the entries had come up with clever, eye-catching ways to promote the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle message.  It was obvious that a lot of hard work had thought had gone into all the designs which made my job as one of the judges very difficult.  After much deliberation we decided to award the overall prize to the P4 pupils at Strathpeffer Primary.  The whole class had all worked together to produce a really effective and colourful mural which will look striking as a large banner.  It is encouraging to see our young people are so aware of important recycling issues.  The mural banners will help to remind us all to make full use of the wide range of waste recycling facilities at our network of Recycling Centres.”  

The pupils from Strathpeffer visited the Council’s TEC Services Committee in Inverness on Thursday last week to unveil their winning design.  Runners-up from 12 other Highland primary schools will also see their designs produced into banners that will go on display at their local Recycling Centres.
