Making an entrance at Culloden Avenue
A project is due to get underway next week which will see the replacement of field gates at either end of Culloden Avenue in Inverness with versions that are more in keeping with the Culloden House setting.
Modern housing and roads development have impinged upon the Avenue, and at present there is little to indicate that it forms the original approach to one of the principal historic houses of the area. Two gateway structures are proposed for both approaches to the Avenue. The gateway at the Tower Road entrance has been designed to set it apart from adjacent footpaths and streets and will reflect some of the grandeur of Culloden House.
The gate nearest the house, in contrast, has been designed in a simpler style in keeping with the estate policies, so as not to compete with both the principal access to the Avenue on Tower Road or the adjoining entrance pillars to the house.
The project has been developed by The Highland Council’s Planning and Development Service in consultation with Smithton & Culloden Community Council as a second phase to a woodland management and interpretation project. Culloden Avenue, which is owned by the Council, forms part of the designed landscape of Culloden House.
Works are due to commence on site week beginning 28th March and access may be restricted for short periods and the public are requested to follow advisory signage for diversions.
