Citizenship event helps pupils prepare for move to secondary school
A two-day citizenship event created by The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Service in partnership with local businesses and organisations aims to provide help for primary pupils dealing with the transition to secondary education.
An Enterprise Learning Community Group (ELC) in Invergordon which involves Invergordon Academy and its feeder primary schools of Milton, Newmore, Park and South Lodge Primaries has organised this unique and exciting transition opportunity for local S1 and Primary 7 pupils.
This opportunity is being supported by school staff and local businesses and organisations who are enthusiastically working with over 150 pupils to promote transition from P7 to S1 while improving the local environment and further developing positive relationships between younger people and the wider community.
To achieve these aims all pupils will take part in the citizenship event on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 May. The key elements of the event are:
Other activities include presentations from local organisations, planting flowers and plants and tidying up areas of the local community.
Since its inception in May 2010 the Invergordon ELC has met regularly and has been proactive in setting targets, carrying out tasks and evaluating its impact. Very strong relationships have been formed with all those involved and young people in particular have grown in confidence and have felt empowered about their ability to be the drivers of change and improvement.
Organisers hope to continue the success of the project next year, building on the strong links with businesses and organisations. It is also hoped the ELC will continue to grow and be involved in different projects.
