Fire Board Members praise response to wildfires

Members of the Highland and Islands Fire Board have praised the commitment and bravery of firefighters, who tackled a number of recent wildfires in Lochaber, Wester Ross and North West Sutherland.

Board Convener Councillor Richard Durham thanked chief fire officer Trevor Johnston for the efforts of his fire fighters in protecting lives and containing the damage caused by the fires between 29 April and 4 May.  He also thanked employers for allowing staff time off work to carry out their fight fighting duties.

He said: “I am very proud of the firefighters for their outstanding response in tackling these wildfires in some of the most remote areas of the Highlands.

“Combatting these fires was a real challenge and I would also like to commend everyone concerned, including  employers, landowners and estate workers, for their skill and endurance over this very taxing period. They have served their communities well.”
