Land contamination, 25-71 Joss Street, Invergordon.

Highland Council has been successful in a bid for funding for the remediation of contaminated land in Invergordon. The success of the Council’s bid was announced today by Deputy Environment Minister Rhona Brankin. The £751,000 award by the Scottish Executive will allow the contaminated land associated with the former gasworks in Invergordon to be safely remediated.

Following substantial land contamination investigation and assessment Members of The Highland Council’s Transport, Environmental and Community TEC Services Committee agreed on Thursday 17th November, 2005 that the Council would demolish the homes of 34 residents at 25 -71 Joss Street in Invergordon and carry out full remediation of the site which was a former gasworks.

Officers of Highland Council’s Housing Service have, through a process involving extensive liaison, successfully re-homed the residents and agreed the purchase of the privately owned flats within the properties.

Officers of the Council’s Transport, Environmental and Community Services have commissioned a consultancy to detail and cost the remediation works. This work formed the basis of the bid to the Scottish Executive which was submitted in September 2006

Remediation works are programmed to commence in the spring of 2007, and are likely to be completed within 6 months
